Demo of new DDS Data Visualization Classroom on 2/23

February 19, 2024

Visualization Classroom in Data & Decision Sciences (Room 132)

CHCI invites faculty and students to explore a new media-rich, highly collaborative visualization classroom for innovative teaching methodologies and research activities requiring large-scale, high-resolution displays, such as collaborative data science and data visualization projects.

Please join us for a demonstration of the facility with other CHCI members on Feb 23, 2024, from 2 to 3:30 PM, in the new Data & Decision Sciences (DDS) building, room 132 (first floor), hosted by Chris North and Jesse Harden.

The newly inaugurated visualization classroom boasts cutting-edge educational technology designed to enhance the learning and teaching experience. At the heart of the classroom is an expansive high-resolution display wall, measuring an impressive 24 feet in width and 7 feet in height. This wall is composed of 18 synchronized 55-inch LCD panels arranged in a 6x3 grid, offering an ultra-high resolution of 12k by 3k, or 36 megapixels. Powered by the SAGE3 PC with dual Nvidia RTX graphics cards, this setup enables seamless image stitching for an expansive desktop canvas. Additionally, the wall is equipped with a multi-touch overlay and wireless peripherals for interaction.

The classroom is powered by the SAGE3 collaboration software. Co-developed through an NSF grant that includes VT, SAGE3 transforms the display into an interactive whiteboard and infinite canvas that facilitates online collaboration. This software is particularly conducive to activities in data science with its support for collaborative computational notebook cells.
