CHCI Events
CHCI Community Events
Community engagement is critical to the health of our Center, offering opportunities for faculty and students to discover new research opportunities, build relationships, and learn from one another as well as from colleagues outside the Center. Throughout the academic year, the Center hosts a series of social events, guest speakers, workshops on a variety of topics, lab and studio open houses, and a weekly Hack ‘n Yak.
Leadership: Philart Jeon, Associate Director for Community Engagement
CHCI will host an HCI Speaker Series (one speaker per semester) beginning in Fall 2023. The Center will distribute an open call to CHCI members for speaker nominations at the outset of each semester. Please see here for more details.
- Speaker: Dr. Ryan McMahan, Department of Computer Science, Deputy Director of the Center for Human-Computer Interaction
- Abstract: Virtual reality (VR) applications generate rich interaction data, including the motions of the user's head and hands. Machine learning this data presents new opportunities for predicting and augmenting aspects of the user experience (UX). This talk presents several investigations of these opportunities. First, we discuss how machine learning can be used to predict trainee learning outcomes from VR-based training applications. We demonstrate that body motions, particularly velocities, are indicative of learning gains. We then discuss how effectively machine learning can be used to identify VR users and its implications for user privacy and security. Finally, we briefly discuss the need for more datasets in this area and present a tool for capturing data from consumer VR applications like Beat Saber and Half-Life: Alyx.
