CHCI Big Idea Workshop

The CHCI Big Ideas Workshop

A one-day symposium hosted by Virginia Tech’s Center for Human-Computer Interaction. The Center for Human-Computer Interaction (CHCI) invites you to submit your big idea to our Seventh Annual Workshop on the Future of HCI. The workshop is scheduled for Friday, March 17, 2023, and it is a unique opportunity for researchers—faculty members and students —to propose work on complex challenges relevant to human-computer interaction and see what other members propose.

CHCI Big Idea Workshop

When

Friday, March, 17th, 2023.
See detailed Schedule below

Where

Squires Brush Mountain Room A (305A)

An ever-changing world of technology has brought about new societal, technical, and environmental challenges that require interdisciplinary approaches. The CHCI Big Ideas workshop is designed to provide a platform for researchers to initiate an intellectual discourse about their ideas with CHCI members and experts. Specifically, the workshop will provide opportunities for researchers to

  • Pitch big ideas that they want to work on in the near future
  • Learn new big ideas that they want to potentially be part of
  • Give and receive feedback about their big ideas
  • Participate in discussion with other presenters and attendees for brainstorming
  • Find collaborators to work on their ideas for future external funding
  • Refine ideas that can be submitted to the CHCI planning grant program (faculty only, due 4/7/2023) soon after the workshop.

Individuals and teams are invited to submit an abstract (max one page) that sparks new ideas and provokes thought by Feb 24th (See Call for Participation for more details). You can also attend the workshop without presenting any.

Connection = Impact

Abstract

To tackle societal challenges ranging from waste reduction to public health, innovation is critical. But in an increasingly complex world, individuals cannot successfully innovate on their own.  Connecting with others is a powerful way to make an impact.  When we connect with others, we find interesting ways to apply our technical expertise, develop solutions to problems we’ve never considered, and create solutions that people will use.  I will share lessons from my research, practice, and Design for America, a national network I started to empower people to make positive impacts in their communities.

Bio

Liz designs and implements new technologies to effectively collaborate. She is particularly interested in how new social technologies enable new ways to solve problems with diverse stakeholders; how the technologies change the roles stakeholders play, and the new organizations needed for this work. Her work cuts across design, human-computer interaction, and organizational studies, is generously supported by the National Science Foundation and industry, and informed by her formal training in product design, management science, and studio art at Stanford University and Dartmouth College.

She is the recipient of the 2022 ACM Social Impact Award and the 2018 Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Award for Institutional Excellence. Her work has been featured in outlets including NPR, ABC, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Forbes, The Guardian, Harvard Business Review, and Wired.
