New ACM interactions article by Deborah Tatar and Steve Harrison
September 25, 2023
Deborah Tatar and Steve Harrison are recently retired VT CS and CHCI faculty. Harrison regularly taught the course “Design of Information”, and occasionally taught “Intro to HCI” and the HCI capstone (as well as writing the proposal for it). Tatar regularly taught the CS course on Computer Supported Cooperative Work, and the Capstone on Designing for Equity and Inclusion, among others, and served as advisor to the VT Chapter of the Association for Women in Computing for 15 years.
They recently wrote a provocative article for the current issue of ACM interactions: Requiem for an Interface. The article is making a strong case for having a critical eye when designing HCI systems. It points out the necessity to think beyond “features” that address specific needs and consider entire systems of use including setting.
