Kurt Luther has developed facial recognition software to identify civil war soldiers

Kurt Luther has developed facial recognition software that has been used to successfully identify Civil War soldiers previously unidentified.  The platform called “PhotoSleuth” uses crowdsourcing to supplement the work of algorithms that seek to identify faces in Civil War era photos. The research has been funded primarily by the National Science Foundation.

This work was recognized with the best paper award at the ACM Intelligent User Interfaces conference in March, co-authored by Prof. Kurt Luther and his PhD students Vikram Mohanty (lead author) and Sneha Mehta, undergraduate researcher David Thames.  Their paper is entitled "Photo Sleuth: Combining Human Expertise and Face Recognition to Identify Historical Portraits”.
