CHCI Welcomes New Faculty Affiliate Alaa Algargoosh
November 25, 2024
Alaa Algargoosh is an Assistant Professor in Architecture. Before joining VT, she was a Postdoctoral researcher at MIT Media Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received her Ph.D. in Architecture - Building Technology (Acoustics) from University of Michigan. Her research bridges design, art, and technology while focusing on acoustics, and it is at the intersection of research and innovation.
Through her research, she develops innovative solutions for acoustics that utilize computational models, immersive experiences that enhance well-being, and advanced computational technology that enables designing and analyzing complex acoustic environments. Her work investigates the links between the physical, perceptual, and social aspects that shape the acoustic experience. Her current work includes two areas of focus: machine learning and acoustic experiences for enhancing well-being.
She was named Innovator Under 35 by MIT Technology Review, in addition to many prestigious awards in innovation, sustainability, art, and technology.
Alaa shared her interest in CHCI as: "I believe that Innovation flourishes at the intersection of disciplines. Thus, my research spans architecture, computational and material design, HCI, and immersive technology in addition to environmental psychology, with acoustics as the unifying thread. Joining the CHCI would provide an ideal environment to connect with researchers in related fields, learn about their work, contribute my expertise in acoustics, and establish collaborations to advance technology related to HCI, VR, and AR.”
