Dawei Zhou, assistant professor of computer science and a faculty affiliate at CHCI, is on a mission to improve AI’s logical reasoning capabilities to tackle complex real-world problems. Recently awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER award, Zhou aims to develop AI systems that better mimic human-like intelligence and learn from scarce data, which is crucial in areas like diagnosing rare diseases and detecting financial fraud. His project, titled “Long-Tailed Learning in the Open and Dynamic World: Theories, Algorithms, and Applications,” will receive $600,000 over five years.

Zhou’s work has broad implications. Collaborating with financial institutions to combat fraud, he also partners with Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., to harness AI for medical use cases. By overcoming AI’s limitations in processing rare or distributed data, Zhou’s research aims to address significant challenges in healthcare and financial systems. Learn more about his work and grant .
