Just as the smartphone marked a significant shift in the way people use computing for work, communication, and play, augmented reality (AR) technology has the potential to make everyday computing even more ubiquitous and convenient. AR glasses can give users rapid access to information and apps without the limitations of a small screen or the need to use their hands to interact. AR and AI have the potential to be distracting, overwhelming, or even dangerous if we simply replicate the smartphone experience in the AR glasses.
Dr. Bowman will discuss some of his research on designing powerful but calm user interfaces for future AR glasses and some ideas on how AI can be integrated into AR glasses to improve the user experience further. To realize this vision, we need interdisciplinary work between technologists, designers, artists, and human factors experts.
