Community in Action

Community engagement is part of our mission statement, offering faculty, students and colleagues from outside the Center a place to discover new research opportunities, build relationships, and learn from one another. Throughout the academic year, the Center hosts a series of weekly seminars, distinguished guest speakers, workshops on a variety of topics, lab and studio open houses, social events, and a weekly Hack-n-Yak.

Poster session at a CHCI research event where students and researchers present projects, discuss findings, and network in a collaborative academic setting.

Weekly Seminar Series

Each semester, the Center hosts a Weekly Seminar Series, a one-hour virtual event featuring a Center student member and an HCI faculty affiliate from the Center or other HCI programs to share their latest research. The event takes place on Fridays at 11:00 AM and can be accessed via Zoom. A full schedule is released at the start of each semester.

The goals of the speaker series are to:

  • Bring attention to the work and experience of distinguished senior researchers and leaders in funded research
  • Inspire Center faculty and students in their research and help them form collaborations
  • Demonstrate the diversity of the field of Human-Computer Interaction

To request a speaking slot for an upcoming semester’s Weekly Seminar Series contact the Center’s assistant director, Yan Chen.

Distinguished Speaker Series

Each semester, the Center hosts an HCI Distinguished Speaker to give a one-hour in-person lecture about their latest research. The event includes a fifteen-minute Q&A with the speaker.
